Maze re-claims or recycles most of the raw materials we consume
Maze uses only the highest quality domestic, re-melted steel (which comes from scrapped automobiles frames, radiators and I-beams for example). By using re-melted steel, the obvious environmental benefit is that no additional mining must be done to meet our steel demands and less steel is thrown into landfills. The scrap steel that we generate while making nails heads right back to the steel mills for re-melting or sold for
various uses.
We use millions of pounds of zinc in our unique Double Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG) process. The Zinc alloy we use is “special
high grade”… 99.99%
pure… less than
.003% lead or
cadmium content. Using this special
high grade zinc alloy makes the Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG) process easier on the environment and recycling easier. All of our waste zinc is recycled into zinc metal
or ingredients used in paint pigments, car tires, sunblock, etc. So, our zinc by-products are being utilized too.
Scientific Certification Systems (SCS),
an independent third party evaluation and
certification company, has certified that
Maze STORMGUARD® double hot-dipped
galvanized and bright
nails have a minimum 85% recycled steel
and zinc content.
Maze Nails has a strong commitment to insuring that our manufacturing process results in reclaimable products. Many nail manufacturers, including Maze, "pickle" their steel in an acid bath prior to making it into nails. After several years and hundreds of thousands of dollars, we now have a completely self-contained Acid Recovery Unit. The unit converts the harmful, spent acids into useful raw materials we then can offer to other companies. The "ferrous sulfate" which this equipment extracts, for example, is used in fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, as a stabilizer to
render hazardous
chemicals safer for
landfilling, and even in snack foods.
Maze packaging is made from recycled content cardboard
All Maze nails and spikes are packaged in cardboard boxes which are made from recycled paper products - and many of our price lists and literature pieces are printed on recycled paper too. Maze Nails has a strong commitment to using quality recycled materials whenever we can.
That said, our office paper is
recycled locally in
Lostant, Illinois.
• Hydroelectric power
from Illinois River
Turbines (at Starved
Rock Lock & Dam)
supplies a good part of
Maze Nails’ needs.
• Process wastewater “cake” from filter
presses high in iron
or zinc are recycled.
• Fewer than 200 GPD
(gallons per day) of
process wastewater
discharge. Waste water
is pre-treated on-site
and contains less than
2% of allowable zinc
content and less than
1/10th of 1% of the
allowable lead content
per federal limits.
• Office paper is
recycled locally in
Lostant, Illinois.
• Used machine oil
is recycled in Rockford,
Illinois and returned
to us.
• Forklift & automotive
batteries recycled.
• Sawdust is used
to clean nails…
no solvents.
So there you have it, the "green" side of Maze Nails.
